The Senate on Wednesday condemned the recent abduction of pupils, teachers and other residents in parts of Oyo State, urging the Federal Government and security agencies to deploy all necessary resources to secure the immediate rescue of the victims.

Lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of those killed during the attack and expressed deep concern over the recurring assaults on schools and rural communities across the country. They warned that continued attacks on educational institutions pose a serious threat to the nation’s future and the safety of its citizens.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North), who outlined the scale of the incident, including reported killings and the abduction of dozens of pupils, teachers and a toddler from affected communities in Oyo State.

During deliberations, senators called for the strengthened implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative, improved intelligence gathering, and enhanced security measures for vulnerable communities.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole raised concerns about accountability in security operations, calling for a comprehensive audit of funds allocated to security agencies.

He also questioned operational decisions surrounding the attack and stressed the importance of effective oversight.

According to him, insecurity may continue to persist despite increased budgetary allocations if there is no accountability in the deployment and management of security resources.

Similarly, Senator Sani Musa emphasized the need for greater transparency in the utilisation of security funds.

He questioned the apparent gap between funding levels and operational effectiveness and urged the National Assembly to strengthen its oversight functions to ensure improved outcomes in the fight against insecurity.

Presiding over the session, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau commended security agencies for their ongoing efforts but called for sustained action, noting that addressing insecurity requires the collective commitment of all arms of government.

The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to supporting measures aimed at strengthening national security and ensuring the safe return of all abducted victims.
