A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State led by former governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has endorsed the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of Saturday’s election.
Oyinlola announced the decision on Sunday at a gathering in Osogbo where the faction formally declared its support for Oyebamiji’s bid to become the next governor of the state.
The former governor said the group resolved to withdraw its support for the administration of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke because of what he described as a lack of inclusiveness in the running of the state.
He was joined at the event by former Secretary to the State Government, Fatai Akinbade, and former PDP National Vice Chairman, Southwest, Tajudeen Oladipo.
Oyinlola, however, stressed that the group had not abandoned the PDP, explaining that its decision to support Oyebamiji was based on what the members considered the best interest of Osun State.
According to him, the endorsement was driven by necessity, conviction and a genuine desire to advance the development of the state.
Speaking on behalf of the PDP leaders and members present, Oyinlola said the group was determined to mobilise its members to vote for Oyebamiji in Saturday’s election.
He described the decision as part of efforts to rescue Osun from what he termed the scourge of political nepotism.
“One of the major issues that have created this unfortunate situation, in our considered view, is the lack of inclusiveness in the governance of our state,” Oyinlola said.
The former governor maintained that the PDP members backing Oyebamiji remained committed to their political convictions while seeking what they described as a broader and more inclusive approach to governance in Osun State.
