The Organising Committee of the Prof. Akin Oyebode Cup has attributed the tournament’s growing influence and increasing recognition to the sports development policies of Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji as preparations gather momentum for its fifth anniversary edition in 2026.
The committee said the upcoming edition, themed “Building to Last,” is expected to further strengthen the competition’s place among notable grassroots football development platforms in Nigeria.
According to the organisers, the progress recorded by the tournament over the years has been inspired largely by Governor Oyebanji’s commitment to using sports as a tool for youth development, economic growth and social transformation within Ekiti State.
The statement revealed the administration’s investments in sports infrastructure, including the ongoing upgrade of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium to international standards and the construction of an ultra-modern indoor sports facility.
The committee noted that such projects have helped strengthen the foundation for grassroots sports development and created opportunities for emerging talents across the state.
It also acknowledged the role of the tournament sponsor, Akintunde Oyebode, whose sustained support and long-term vision were described as critical to the growth of the competition.
Organisers said the sponsorship aligns with broader efforts to utilise sports as a means of creating opportunities for young people, reducing youth restiveness and developing pathways for talent discovery.
Beyond identifying football talents, the committee stated that the tournament continues to create opportunities for a broad range of participants within the sports ecosystem, including coaches, referees, administrators, photographers, media professionals and content creators.
The organisers reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the competition and supporting the state government’s efforts toward strengthening sports development and youth engagement across Ekiti State.
