Oyo State has recorded a significant improvement in environmental performance, moving from 34th to seventh position among states ranked on environmental affairs across Nigeria.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Temitayo Aderinto, disclosed this during a climate change sensitisation and familiarisation programme organised for desk officers across Ministries, Departments and Agencies as well as other stakeholders in the state.
Aderinto said the development reflected progress made by the state in environmental management and sustainability initiatives, attributing the improvement to ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening environmental protection measures.
According to him, the achievement demonstrates the state government’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and advancing climate-related actions.
He also stressed the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to sustain the progress and further improve environmental outcomes across the state.
Speaking at the programme, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Ecology and Water Resources in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Olorunpoto Rahaman, assured participants of legislative support for policies and programmes designed to strengthen environmental management.
Rahaman said technological advancement would also improve disaster preparedness in the state, noting that early warning systems could provide timely alerts for flooding and other environmental emergencies.
The sensitisation programme brought together environmental officers, government officials and other stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, increase awareness on climate change issues and encourage sustainable environmental practices across Oyo State.
