The Oyo State Government has honoured individuals, organisations and development partners that have made significant contributions to climate action, environmental sustainability and biodiversity preservation across the state, as part of activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day celebration. The recognition was aimed at appreciating stakeholders whose support has strengthened the state’s efforts towards building a climate resilient and environmentally sustainable future.
Speaking at the event at Ibadan business school, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, said the awards were instituted to acknowledge and validate the commitment of partners who have consistently supported government initiatives on climate change mitigation, environmental protection, afforestation and sustainable development. He noted that addressing the challenges of climate change requires collective action from government, private organisations, civil society groups and residents.
Aderinto reiterated the commitment of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to implementing policies and programmes that promote environmental sustainability, climate resilience and responsible management of natural resources. He stressed that the government would continue to foster partnerships that advance climate smart solutions capable of safeguarding the environment for present and future generations.
As part of the annual commemoration, the state government also flagged off the planting of one million trees across Oyo State to enhance carbon sequestration, combat land degradation and improve biodiversity.
The Commissioner in addition commissioned a newly constructed public toilet facility at Ojoo, Ibadan, as part of efforts to curb open defecation, improve public hygiene and promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
Also, 250 uniforms were distributed to environmental sanitation personnel (street sweepers) in order to enhance their operations towards environmental cleanliness across the state.
The Commissioner commended all award recipients and stakeholders for their dedication to environmental stewardship and urged residents to embrace environmentally responsible practices that support the state’s climate goals.
Present at the event were government officials, environmental advocates, development partners, community leaders and other stakeholders committed to advancing sustainable environmental management in Oyo State.
