The Oyo State Government has challenged civil servants to continually upgrade their skills and embrace lifelong learning in order to remain productive and relevant in an increasingly dynamic workplace.

The call was made by the state’s Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Abdulwaheed Adelabu, during the opening of a one-day capacity-building workshop for 85 civil servants in Ibadan.

The training, organised by the state government through the Simeon Adebo Staff Development Centre, forms part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening the competence and efficiency of the public service.

Speaking with journalists after declaring the workshop open, Adelabu stressed that continuous professional development had become indispensable in a rapidly evolving world driven by technology, innovation and changing workplace demands.

According to him, public servants must look beyond their existing knowledge and seek new competencies that will enhance service delivery and improve their ability to meet the expectations of government and citizens.

“Civil servants need to undergo more training and acquire additional skills that will enhance their efficiency and responsibilities at the state level,” he said.

The workshop, held at the Simeon Adebo Staff Development Centre within the state secretariat, is one of several training programmes designed to equip workers with the tools needed to navigate contemporary challenges in public administration.

Adelabu noted that the state government remains committed to building a highly skilled and professional workforce capable of supporting its development agenda.

He explained that the administration has continued to invest in training opportunities across all levels of the civil service, ensuring that both academic and non-academic personnel benefit from capacity development initiatives.

“The government, through the Simeon Adebo Staff Development Centre, is not relenting in ensuring that all cadres in the service are trained. Both the academic and non-academic staff are working to sustain the legacy of Simeon Adebo,” he added.

The commissioner also used the opportunity to reassure workers of the government’s commitment to their welfare amid prevailing economic challenges across the country.

He said the administration of Seyi Makinde remains focused on improving the well-being of civil servants, recognising their critical role in driving governance and public service delivery.
