Concerned by the rising wave of kidnappings, banditry and other criminal activities in Oyo State, members of the Muslim community on Sunday gathered in large numbers at the Yidi Praying Ground in Agodi, Ibadan, to offer special prayers for peace, security and national unity.
The prayer session, held with the approval of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abdulganiy Agbotomokekere, attracted Islamic clerics, community leaders and worshippers from the 11 local government areas that make up Ibadanland.
Participants used the occasion to seek divine intervention in the worsening security situation, which has continued to generate anxiety among residents and communities across the state.
Beyond prayers, religious leaders urged Nigerians to embrace unity and collective responsibility in addressing the challenges confronting the country, stressing that insecurity can only be effectively tackled when citizens rise above ethnic, political and social divisions.
They described national unity as one of the most potent tools for combating criminality and restoring peace to affected communities.
The gathering comes amid growing concerns over the spate of abductions and violent attacks in parts of Oyo State, particularly in rural areas where residents have repeatedly called for stronger security measures.
One of the incidents that has heightened public concern is the abduction of more than 40 teachers and pupils during a coordinated attack on schools in Ahoro-Esiele, Oriire Local Government Area, on May 15, 2026.
The victims, comprising students and members of staff from three schools, were reportedly seized by armed assailants, sparking outrage and renewed calls for urgent action to secure educational institutions and vulnerable communities.
Speakers at the prayer programme lamented the growing threat posed by kidnappers and other criminal elements, noting that insecurity has continued to affect livelihoods, education and social stability across the country.
They urged governments at all levels, security agencies, traditional institutions and citizens to work together in confronting the menace and preventing further attacks.
The clerics also offered prayers for the safe return of victims still in captivity, as well as wisdom and strength for leaders entrusted with safeguarding lives and property.
As worshippers dispersed after the prayer session, many expressed hope that sustained collaboration between government, security agencies, community leaders and citizens would help restore peace and confidence in affected areas.
