Lagos state government has warned residents against flagrant disregard for crossing guard on railway crossings within the state.
Senior Special Assistant on Media to the governor, Wale Ajetunmobi, said this while condemning a potentially fatal train accident that was narrowly averted at the Railway Crossing in Cappa, Mushin.
According to him, the incident occurred when vehicles were stopped to allow an approaching train to pass, but a fully loaded passenger bus and a saloon car reportedly became stuck due to a widening ditch beneath the rail tracks.
According to eyewitness accounts the train driver applied emergency brakes upon spotting the obstruction ahead.
The saloon car was said to have lurched backward to escape impact, while the passenger bus managed to free itself just in time.
The train eventually came to a halt just beyond the point where the vehicles had been stuck, narrowly missing the bus by a small margin.
Despite being at a safe distance, the eyewitness described the situation as terrifying, noting that the bus driver sped off afterward, allegedly to avoid confrontation with frightened bystanders.
The report also suggested that the bus driver had ignored a crossing guard’s warning prior to the incident.
