Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has revealed that the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing to serve only one four-year term if elected president.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, describing the agreement as a key pillar of the alliance forged within the NDC ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to him, the arrangement provides that power would return to the North after a single four-year tenure ending in 2031.
“I personally believe him. Based on what I now know about him, I don’t think he will renege. I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes. We are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” Kwankwaso said.
He added, “We will work together as a group, as a party, as friends, brothers and so on and involve everybody to work together so that after our term of four years in 2031, then it (the presidency) comes back to the North. That is the general agreement.”
Kwankwaso said his perception of the former Anambra State governor had changed since the 2023 elections, describing Obi as a dependable leader committed to Nigeria’s progress.
The former Kano State governor noted that the one-term agreement was designed to strengthen trust among stakeholders in the coalition and promote political stability ahead of the 2027 general election.
