The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has condemned the remand of activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre, describing the development as a dangerous setback for Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi expressed concern over what he termed the increasing use of state institutions to suppress dissenting voices, warning that such actions could undermine civic freedoms and democratic values if allowed to continue unchecked.

His reaction followed a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, where Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore’s remand pending the determination of an application seeking a stay of execution of an earlier court order that revoked his bail.

The court also dismissed an application requesting the judge’s recusal from the matter over allegations of bias.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi said the latest development reflects a troubling trend that threatens the principles of justice, free expression, and democratic engagement in the country.

The former Anambra State governor stressed the importance of protecting the rights of citizens to express differing opinions without fear of intimidation or persecution, noting that democracy thrives when institutions uphold fairness, transparency, and the rule of law.

Obi called on relevant authorities to ensure that judicial processes remain impartial and that constitutional rights are respected at all times, regardless of political or ideological differences.

The case has continued to attract public attention, with civil society groups and political stakeholders closely monitoring developments surrounding Sowore’s legal battle.
