Delhi Police on Saturday moved prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk to a hospital after 20 days of hunger strike, citing concerns over his deteriorating health.
Wangchuk, 59, began his fast on June 28 to demand the resignation of India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, over alleged irregularities in examinations for admission into medical schools.
The protest, held at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, attracted hundreds of students who joined Wangchuk in recent weeks. Additional demonstrations were also organised by the online satirical movement, the Cockroach Janta Party.
In a statement, a Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police said the decision to transfer Wangchuk to a hospital was made in compliance with a court order and medical advice.
“As per the orders of the High Court and on expert medical advice due to the deteriorating health condition of Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care,” the police official said.
The statement added that some protesters attempted to obstruct the police while the transfer was being carried out, resulting in a brief commotion.
“While complying with the orders, the protestors tried to create obstruction, in which slight commotion ensued. We request the protestors at Jantar Mantar to peacefully vacate the place at the earliest,” the statement added.
Videos from the protest site showed police officers surrounding Wangchuk and carrying him away from the stage under white sheets as supporters gathered around in confusion.
The protest has become a focal point for students and education activists demanding greater transparency and accountability in India’s examination system.
