The House of Representatives has extended the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act by three months, shifting the deadline from June 30 to September 30, 2026.

The decision is aimed at allowing the Federal Government to complete ongoing capital projects captured in the 2025 budget.

The extension followed the passage of a bill titled, “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, 2025 to extend the implementation of the capital aspect of the Appropriation Act, 2025 from 30 June 2026 to 30 September 2026 and for Related Matters.”

The bill was considered during an emergency plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and scaled through first, second, and third readings in a single sitting.

Lawmakers suspended relevant provisions of the House Standing Orders to fast-track its consideration.

Leading the debate, the House Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, said the extension became necessary due to the number of capital projects still ongoing under the 2025 budget.

He noted that several projects had not been fully executed, making it important to provide additional time to ensure proper completion and value for public spending.

The House emphasized that the extension was in the interest of effective budget implementation and project delivery across key sectors of the economy.
