Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday hosted the Ministerial Implementation Retreat on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM) at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Marina.

The Governor said he welcomed the Honorable Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, as both sides discussed challenges affecting electricity supply in Lagos and practical solutions to address
Speaking at the retreat ,Sanwo -Olu says Lagos needs over 6,000MW of power and the goal is to build a more reliable and sustainable market that moves the state towards 24-hour power supply.

He noted that achieving this will require investment in embedded and off-grid generation, better transmission and distribution, and a regulatory framework that works for Lagos.
He said with the federal Electricity Act 2023 and the Lagos Electricity Law 2024, the state now has the legal backing to address grid bottlenecks and secure better gas supply for power generation.

Also Speaking at the meeting, Minister Tegbe said Lagos alone accounts for about 40 to 50 per cent of Nigeria’s electricity demand, making it a priority corridor under the Federal Government’s strategy that also targets Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt.

He announced two structures to drive implementation: a Joint Technical Working Committee co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos Ministry of Energy and the MD of the Lagos Independent System Operator, and a Steering Committee chaired by Sanwo-Olu with himself as co-chair.

The Governor appreciated federal partners including the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Rural Electrification Agency and other stakeholders, adding that the initiative marks the beginning of President Bola Tinubu’s vision of 24-hour electricity supply.

Today, we hosted the Ministerial Implementation Retreat on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM) with the Federal Government and key stakeholders in the power sector. I welcomed the Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, as we discussed the challenges affecting electricity supply in Lagos and what we must do to address them.

Lagos needs over 6,000MW of power and our goal is to build a more reliable and sustainable electricity market that moves us towards 24-hour power supply. This will require investment in embedded and off-grid generation, better transmission and distribution, and a regulatory framework that works for Lagos. With the federal Electricity Act 2023 and our Lagos Electricity Law 2024, we now have the legal backing to address grid bottlenecks and secure better gas supply for power generation.

I appreciate the commitment of our federal partners, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Rural Electrification Agency and other stakeholders. At the end, what matters is that Lagos residents and businesses feel the difference through more reliable electricity.
