Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a personal cash gift of N20 million each for the overall best graduating students of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
The governor made the announcement on Wednesday during LASU’s combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies at the university’s main campus in Ojo, Lagos.
The beneficiaries are Ayilara Olawale, the overall best graduating student for the 2024/2025 academic session, and Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide, who emerged as the best graduating student for the 2025/2026 session.
Olawale, a graduate of Project Management Technology, finished with a 4.96 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and First Class Honours, while Oluolamide graduated with First Class Honours in Aerospace Engineering after recording a 4.97 CGPA.
The announcement was confirmed in a statement shared by the governor’s New Media aide, Jubril Gawat, who said the N20 million cash reward would be presented to each of the two outstanding graduates. Sanwo-Olu also described the cash gifts as his personal donation in recognition of their exceptional academic achievements.
The reward comes shortly after Oluolamide received a separate N10 million cash prize from the Sunbeth Excellence Partnership Programme for emerging as LASU’s overall best graduating student for the 2025/2026 academic session.
LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, had earlier announced the two graduates as the best students for their respective academic sessions. More than 20,000 students are graduating across the two sessions, with 494 earning First Class Honours.
The governor’s gesture underscores the importance of academic excellence and is expected to encourage students to strive for outstanding performance in their studies.
