The Federal Government has assured the Nigeria Police Force of timely financial support to strengthen security operations ahead of the off-season elections scheduled for June and August 2026.
The government said adequate funding would be made available to enable the police effectively secure the elections and enhance ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security across the country.
The assurance followed an earlier appeal by the inspector general Police, Olatunji Disu, for the release of outstanding funds owed to the institution.
Disu stressed that proper funding is essential for the force to effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities, maintain law and order, and address security challenges nationwide.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, acknowledged the critical role of the Nigeria Police Force in safeguarding lives and property as well as combating insecurity across the country.
According to him, the Federal Government is committed to ensuring the prompt release of approved funds to support police operations, particularly in preparation for the off-season governorship elections expected later in the year.
Ogunjimi further advised the Inspector-General of Police to sustain engagement with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in order to facilitate the speedy release of outstanding allocations due to the force.
