The Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to support the families of teachers from Oyo State who lost their lives while in captivity, as well as the families of soldiers who died during rescue operations.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the donation during Wednesday’s plenary, describing it as a demonstration of the Senate’s commitment to supporting bereaved families and honouring the sacrifice of the fallen security personnel.

Also speaking during the session, the Senator representing Bauchi Central, Abdul Ningi, called on the Federal Government and security agencies to immediately prosecute and publicly parade suspects arrested in connection with the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.

According to Ningi, those responsible for the crime must face the full weight of the law to deter future acts of kidnapping and restore public confidence in the justice system.

“What is important going forward now is to take a cue. Now we have people arrested, they must be paraded, prosecuted and let the law take its full course,” Ningi said.

He warned that any delay in prosecuting the suspects could create the impression that the authorities were unwilling to ensure justice.

“Delayed prosecution will create another impression that something is wrong. I therefore call on the security agencies to prosecute, parade them, and use them as an example,” he added.

Gunmen had abducted pupils and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, LA Primary School and Community Grammar School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The victims spent 56 days in captivity before they were rescued on Friday by a joint team of security operatives.
