The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has revealed plans to sponsor a bill that would introduce a single six-year tenure for presidents and governors in Nigeria.
Bamidele said the proposed legislation would be among the first bills he intends to push when lawmakers return for the 11th Senate.
According to him, the bill seeks to make it possible for individuals elected as president or governor to serve only one term of six years, replacing the current arrangement that allows officeholders to seek re-election for a second four-year term.
“One of the first set of bills that I look forward to moving when we come back for the 11th Senate is a bill that makes it possible for anyone who wants to be president or governor to spend only one term of six years,” Bamidele said.
The proposal is expected to spark debate among political stakeholders, with supporters arguing that it could reduce the pressure associated with re-election campaigns and allow elected leaders to focus more on governance.
Critics, however, may question whether a single six-year term would provide enough accountability to voters.
The bill is yet to be formally introduced before the National Assembly.
