President Bola Tinubu has urged the National Assembly to speed up legislative action toward the creation of state police in order to improve security coverage, especially in vulnerable and underserved communities.
The president renewed his call for the establishment of state police, in a statement condemning the reported killing of one of the kidnapped teachers in Oyo state.
Describing the act as barbaric and unacceptable, Tinubu argued that recurring cases of kidnapping and insecurity across the country highlight the urgent need for decentralised policing structures.
He assured residents of Oyo State that security agencies are intensifying efforts to rescue victims abducted by gunmen in the Esiele Community area of the state.
The President also said the Federal Government was working closely with the Oyo State Government and security agencies to ensure the safe return of all victims.
According to him, security personnel are operating round the clock to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The President expressed sympathy to Governor Seyi Makinde, the state government and residents affected by the incident, while also condoling with families impacted by the abductions.
Gunmen reportedly invaded the Esiele community last Friday and abducted staff, students and pupils from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School and L.A. Primary School.
Meanwhile, some teachers in Oyo State have taken to the street demanding the Release of their colleagues and pupils.
Few days ago, over 40 students/teachers were kidnapped by terrorists in Oyo state- some days after the state governor announced his intention to run for president.
