US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will begin referring to artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence”, saying the new description better reflects the capabilities of the technology.
Trump made the announcement on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. He also rejected efforts to establish a global framework to regulate artificial intelligence, arguing that the United States would not support measures that could hinder the development of the technology.
The President said the word “artificial” could make the technology appear fake despite its capabilities. He stated that US government documents would henceforth use “Super Intelligence” and expressed hope that the terminology would eventually be adopted globally.
Trump also described the technology as highly significant while urging caution over its development. His comments came as international discussions continue over AI safety, regulation and the potential risks associated with increasingly advanced systems.
The announcement followed a social media poll Trump conducted days earlier, in which he asked his followers to choose a new name for artificial intelligence. Among the alternatives he proposed were “Superior Intelligence”, “Extreme Intelligence” and “Supreme Intelligence”.
However, “superintelligence” already has a distinct meaning in AI research, where it generally refers to a hypothetical form of intelligence that would surpass human capabilities across a broad range of cognitive tasks.
Trump’s remarks at the UN therefore combined a proposed change in terminology with his broader position that the US should continue developing AI without what he described as excessive regulatory constraints.
