The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved contracts for the digitisation of FCT High Courts, with the project expected to commence within two weeks.
The General Counsel and Mandate Secretary of the FCT Legal Services Secretariat, Salman Dako, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja after the FCT Administration Executive Council meeting chaired by Wike.
Dako said the project was designed to modernise the administration of justice by replacing manual record-keeping with an electronic court recording and case management system.
He explained that the initiative would cover 67 courtrooms across the Federal Capital Territory, enabling the courts to transition from handwritten records and physical filing procedures to digital documentation and electronic case management.
According to him, the existing manual processes have presented challenges in recording court proceedings, filing documents and tracking cases, potentially contributing to delays in the administration of justice.
Dako said the new system would improve the organisation and accessibility of judicial records while allowing lawyers and litigants to adopt electronic case filing and reduce their reliance on physical documents.
He described the initiative as an important step towards modernising court administration, noting that some judicial divisions outside the FCT had already begun adopting similar digital processes.
The mandate secretary added that the project was expected to improve efficiency in the justice system and establish a more technology-driven approach to judicial administration in the nation’s capital.
