Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he never promised President Bola Tinubu that he would join the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that his support for the president should not be interpreted as membership of the ruling party.

Wike made the remarks while responding to comments by some APC governors urging him to join the party.

It’s only President Tinubu that put me in this position. If the Mr. President said, ‘Look, we are done,’ to God be the glory, but because of their (APC Governors) influence, what is influence? The former Rivers State governor also questioned claims about the political influence of some APC governors, arguing that an influential governor should be able to deliver his state to the president during elections.

“A governor that is influential, the President cannot win election in his state, should not call himself influential,” Wike said.

Wike also took a swipe at the Kwara State governor, accusing him of repeatedly blaming him for political developments in the state.

“The governor of Kwara, so unfortunate, anytime he sees a snake, it’s Wike. Anytime he sees a reptile, it’s Wike. Any day he doesn’t eat, it’s Wike,” he said.

He further alleged that the governor had replaced serving members of the National Assembly elected under his platform.

Wike maintained that he has always informed President Tinubu about his political plans.

“There is nothing I have done that I have never told President Tinubu that this is what I intend to do,” he said.

The governor of Kwara, so unfortunate, anytime he sees a snake, it’s Wike. Anytime he sees a reptile, it’s Wike. Any day he doesn’t eat, it’s Wike. I never see people who will give time to gossip more than the work they have been given. He has three serving senators, he changed… pic.twitter.com/Soi8vPEfXG

Wike also questioned the argument that governors supporting President Bola Tinubu should abandon their political parties or stop presenting candidates for National Assembly elections.

Wike cited the examples of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who he said support President Tinubu despite belonging to different political parties.

“Soludo is supporting Mr President. Does it mean that he would not present an APGA candidate for the National Assembly election?” Wike asked.

He similarly questioned whether Adeleke’s support for Tinubu meant he would not support an Accord Party candidate in the National Assembly election.

“Ademola Adeleke is supporting Mr President. Does it mean that he would not support the Accord candidate for the National Assembly election?” Wike said.

The FCT minister also referenced Otti’s support for the President, asking whether that would prevent the Labour Party from fielding candidates for the National Assembly elections.

“Alex Otti is supporting Mr President; by what he said, does it mean that the Labour Party would not present a National Assembly candidate for the election?” he asked.

Wike concluded that the argument being made against his own political position lacked a basis.

“So, you can see the whole thing they are talking about has no basis,” he said.

“Soludo is supporting Mr President. Does it mean that he would not present an APGA candidate for the National Assembly election? Ademola Adeleke is supporting Mr President.
