Some 274 new suspected cholera cases have been reported in Borno State within 24 hours as the disease continue to spread across several communities.
The latest infections bring the total number of suspected cases to 4,204 across several local government areas, while the death toll has risen to 39 since the outbreak began.
The Incident Manager of the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, Dr. Jacob Thlizer, disclosed the figures on Tuesday during a sensitisation meeting on the prevention and management of acute watery diarrhoea held in Maiduguri.
The meeting brought together stakeholders from the 27 local government areas of the state as part of efforts to strengthen response measures and curb the outbreak.
According to Thlizer, the newly reported infections were recorded across 36 wards in the affected areas within a single day.
“In the last 24 hours, 274 new suspected cases were recorded, while the total line-listed suspected cases stand at 4,204 from 36 wards in seven local government areas. In total, we now have 39 deaths,” he said.
The affected areas include Jere, Bama, Kaga, Mafa, Kwaya Kusar, Maiduguri, Konduga, Monguno, Magumeri and Ngala, with varying levels of infection reported across the locations.
Thlizer said the state government had intensified efforts to contain the outbreak through the activation of an Incident Management System and closer collaboration with health partners.
He added that public awareness campaigns had been stepped up in hotspot communities, while essential medical supplies were being procured and distributed to support treatment and response activities.
Health authorities have continued to urge residents to observe proper hygiene practices, ensure access to clean water, and seek immediate medical attention when symptoms such as severe diarrhoea and vomiting occur.
