State governments across Nigeria have declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
Residents in Oyo, Osun, Kano and other States were the holiday was declared have been asked to use the occasion for prayers and reflection on peace, unity and national development.
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde approved a work-free day and encouraged Muslims to pray for the continued peace, stability and prosperity of both the state and the country at large.
Makinde also advised residents to remain security conscious during the celebrations and to report suspicious activities to relevant authorities through the state emergency line.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, the public holiday was declared in recognition of the historical and spiritual significance of Hijrah, which marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah in 622 AD.
“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity and prosperity in our state and our nation,” Oyelade said.
Similarly, the Kano State Government also approved a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, joining other states in recognising the occasion.
The declarations reflect a broader call by state authorities for peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance and renewed commitment to national development during the new Islamic year.
