Flight operations of Air Peace have been grounded following a protest by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who reportedly shut the airline’s terminals across the country.
The protest disrupted flight operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with an Air Peace flight scheduled to depart at 6:30 a.m. unable to take off. Similar disruptions were reported at other airports nationwide, leaving several passengers stranded and their travel plans disrupted.
The development followed an industrial dispute involving the airline and aviation unions, with union members reportedly placing Air Peace terminals under lock and key as part of the protest.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, confirmed the incident, describing it as a union-related matter. He said he would provide further details after getting to the airport and obtaining more information on the situation.
Passengers affected by the disruption expressed frustration over the development. One traveller who identified himself on X as YoufoundAlex said he was stranded at the Lagos airport despite having a 9:00 a.m. appointment in Abuja.
The passenger said the ongoing protest had resulted in the shutdown of the airport and prevented him from proceeding with his journey.
As of the time of filing the report, the management of Air Peace had yet to issue an official statement on the disruption. It was also unclear whether the protest had affected the operations of other airlines at the various airports.
