The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, where three variants of herbal bitters were allegedly labelled with a registration number belonging to a cough syrup.
The agency disclosed the development in a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday, saying the operation followed a report published by The Guardian on October 10, 2026, concerning herbal products bearing falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.
According to the agency, its investigative team conducted surveillance before discovering three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing registration number A7-1827L.
NAFDAC said verification through its NAFDAC Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) portal revealed that the registration number belonged to Greentol Cough Syrup, indicating its fraudulent use on the herbal products.
The agency added that the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer was absent during the operation, while the company manager was arrested for further interrogation.
NAFDAC urged members of the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing activities and other regulatory violations to support its efforts to protect consumers from potentially unsafe products.
The agency provided its call centre numbers, 0800-1-623322 and 0700-1-623322, as well as the email address reforms@nafdac.gov.ng, for receiving credible information from the public.
The operation comes amid a series of enforcement activities targeting counterfeit and unregistered products across the country.
According to PUNCH Online, NAFDAC seized counterfeit alcoholic beverages valued at more than N2bn during a raid at the International Trade Fair Complex in Lagos on October 14. The seizure followed an earlier operation at Ile-Epo Market, where alcoholic beverages estimated to be worth N300m were confiscated.
