As Lagos State prepares to host the maiden National Intermediate Games, Eko 2026, from October 1 to 15, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has called for robust media support to ensure the success and effective projection of the sporting event.

The Games are expected to bring together more than 15,000 athletes who will compete in 28 sporting events across 10 venues, making it a major platform for the development and promotion of youth sports in Nigeria.

Speaking at a media parley in Lagos, the Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee and Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, emphasised the crucial role of journalists, editors and broadcasters in shaping public perception and ensuring the success of Eko 2026.

Omotoso described the media as a formidable partner in progress, noting that its consistent coverage of major events had contributed significantly to projecting Lagos as a leading destination for sports and other international activities.

He said the LOC remains committed to transparency and collaboration with media professionals, assuring journalists of access to information and welcoming constructive criticism and recommendations that could improve the organisation of the Games.

The Commissioner also highlighted Lagos State’s rich history of hosting major sporting events, recalling the maiden National Sports Festival in 1973 and the 2012 edition, which is widely regarded as one of the best-organised in the history of the competition.

According to him, Lagos is determined to raise the bar with Eko 2026 by delivering a competition that meets global standards and sets new benchmarks for youth sports development in Nigeria and across Africa.

The LOC maintained that the media would play a central role beyond reporting the competitions by amplifying the stories and achievements of young athletes while also holding organisers accountable.

With preparations intensifying, stakeholders believe that strong collaboration between the organisers and the media will be vital in ensuring that Eko 2026 leaves a lasting legacy as a major turning point in Nigeria’s youth sporting development.
