Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, has called for sustained reforms, strategic investment and stronger collaboration to build a justice system capable of supporting investment, economic growth and public confidence in the state.
Pedro made the call while delivering a goodwill message on behalf of himself and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the 2026/2027 Legal Year Summit held at The Jewel Aeida, Lekki, Lagos.
The summit was themed, “Justice as an Economic Infrastructure: Strengthening the Judiciary for Africa’s Fifth Largest Economy.”
The Attorney-General stressed that an efficient and accessible justice system was essential to protecting property rights, enforcing contracts, resolving disputes and providing confidence for citizens, businesses and investors.
He called for improved judicial infrastructure, human capital development and greater adoption of technology across the justice sector.
According to Pedro, technologies such as e-filing, digital case management and virtual proceedings could help reduce delays and improve access to justice.
The Attorney-General also urged members of the legal profession to keep pace with emerging areas, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, intellectual property and digital transactions, while maintaining the core values and standards of the profession.
Pedro further encouraged wider adoption of mediation, arbitration and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms as a means of achieving faster and more cost-effective resolution of disputes.
He called for stronger collaboration among the Judiciary, Executive, Legislature, legal profession, business community and other stakeholders.
The Lagos Attorney-General urged participants at the summit to translate the discussions and recommendations into practical and sustainable reforms capable of strengthening the state’s justice system and supporting its economic development.
