Governor Ademola Adeleke has dismissed reports of bandit attacks in parts of Osun State, assuring residents that schools and communities across the state remain safe and adequately protected.
The governor’s reassurance followed widespread panic triggered by rumours of bandits invading some towns, prompting concerned parents in Ila, Ikirun, Obaagun and Osogbo to rush to schools to pick up their children for fear of possible abductions.
Viral videos circulating on social media showed students in some public schools in Ikirun running out of their classrooms amid fears of an impending attack.
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke described the reports as false and urged residents not to be misled by unverified information.
According to the governor, security assessments conducted across border communities and other parts of the state found no evidence of kidnappings or bandit invasions.
“I urge our people to go about their normal activities without fear. Our government has taken proactive steps to secure schools across the state. The Ministry of Education and relevant security agencies have developed and are implementing a comprehensive security strategy,” Adeleke said.
The governor also disclosed that armoured personnel carriers refurbished by his administration are available for deployment to further strengthen security operations across the state.
He alleged that the rumours were being spread by individuals seeking to create fear and destabilise the state, insisting that the security situation remains under control.
Similarly, the Osun State Police Command dismissed claims of bandit attacks, describing the reports as baseless rumours.
Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, warned those responsible for spreading false information to desist from actions capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
Authorities have urged members of the public to rely on verified information from official sources and cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace and order across the state.
