Confusion has emerged in the House of Representatives after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Tuesday read a letter announcing the defection of Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development has raised questions, particularly as Chinda had already emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State before the formal announcement of his defection on the floor of the House.
The defection letter read by the Speaker was dated April 23, 2026, further fueling concerns over the timing and process surrounding the political move.
Following the announcement, Chinda resigned from his position as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, Chinda is reportedly facing a lawsuit over allegations that his defection from the PDP to the APC failed to follow due process.
The House of Representatives is also expected to elect a new Minority Leader in the wake of Chinda’s resignation.
