The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against a retired Major General, a retired Naval Captain, a serving police inspector, and three other defendants over an alleged coup plot and terrorism-related offences.
The defendants are scheduled to be arraigned on April 22, 2026, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.
Those listed in the charge include Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana (retd.), Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor (retd.), Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani.
Also named in the suit, but currently at large, is former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva.
The charge was filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.
According to the prosecution, the defendants are facing allegations ranging from treason and terrorism to failure to disclose security intelligence, as well as money laundering linked to terrorism financing.
At the core of the case is an allegation that the accused persons conspired in 2025 to undermine the Nigerian state.
The charge states that they “conspired with one another to levy war against the state to overthrow the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” an offence punishable under Section 37(2) of the Criminal Code.
The prosecution also alleged that the defendants had prior knowledge of a planned treasonable act involving one Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji and others but failed to report it to the appropriate authorities.
In addition to treason-related allegations, the defendants are being prosecuted for offences under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Further proceedings in the case are expected following their arraignment.
