Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emerged as the presidential candidate of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Jonathan’s nomination was ratified during a Special National Convention organised in Abuja by a faction of the party led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, despite resistance from the PDP’s mainstream leadership and heightened security around the planned venue of the gathering.
The convention, initially scheduled to hold at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja, was disrupted after security operatives restricted access to the venue. The organisers subsequently relocated proceedings to their operational office in Area 10, Garki, where the nomination process was concluded.
Reports indicated that suspected thugs invaded the original venue and allegedly attacked some participants shortly after factional leaders left the premises to engage with security personnel stationed in the area.
The incident created tension around the event, forcing organisers to move the convention to an alternative location to continue their activities.
Meanwhile, other political developments also unfolded on the same day. Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, formally accepted his nomination as the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Coalition.
Similarly, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, secured the presidential ticket of the Allied People’s Movement and unveiled what he described as a “Reset Nigeria Agenda” for the country.
