The Federal Government has announced that repair work on the damaged expansion joints at the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will commence on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the development followed an earlier announcement by the Federal Ministry of Works.

The rehabilitation was initially scheduled to begin in August but was suspended to allow for further traffic management planning following concerns from motorists and members of the public over the short notice and potential impact on traffic.

The two-week project, ordered by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, involves replacing deteriorating expansion joints on the bridge.

The Federal Government said the repairs are aimed at improving road safety, strengthening the structural integrity of the bridge and ensuring smoother traffic flow along the busy Lagos-Ibadan corridor.

The rehabilitation is expected to run from September 8 to September 22, 2026.

Traffic Management Plan

The Lagos State Government has advised motorists using the corridor to plan their journeys ahead of the commencement of the repairs.

According to the state government, one half of the affected section will be closed at a time during the rehabilitation, while motorists will use the remaining open half interchangeably.

The arrangement is intended to minimise the impact of the construction work on traffic flow along the expressway.

The government appealed to motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic managers and other relevant officials throughout the project.

It expressed hope that motorists’ cooperation would enable the rehabilitation to be completed within the scheduled two-week period and help restore safer and smoother movement along the corridor.
