The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has dismissed claims circulating online that the Alimosho General Hospital in Igando has only one functional dialysis machine.
Abayomi said the hospital’s Dialysis Centre currently has eight functional dialysis machines, with six dedicated to general dialysis patients and two reserved for patients living with HIV or hepatitis.
In a statement issued on Monday, the commissioner explained that the arrangement was part of the centre’s infection prevention and control measures.
“The Dialysis Centre at Alimosho General Hospital, Igando has eight dialysis machines, and all eight are working,” Abayomi said.
According to him, dialysis sessions at the facility begin as early as 6am and continue until the last patient is attended to, with services sometimes extending to midnight.
He said the centre conducts up to 200 dialysis sessions every month, supported by a dedicated standby generator to ensure uninterrupted service.
Abayomi added that the extended operating hours were introduced to accommodate patients requiring treatment and reduce the possibility of patients being turned away due to limited operating time.
The commissioner also noted that dialysis services are available at several other public healthcare facilities across Lagos State.
These include Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), General Hospital Lagos, General Hospital Gbagada, Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), Yaba, and Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta.
He disclosed that additional dialysis centres are also being developed in different parts of the state as part of efforts to expand access to renal care.
Abayomi reaffirmed the Lagos State Ministry of Health’s commitment to ensuring residents have access to dialysis and other essential healthcare services.
“The health of Lagosians is our priority at the Lagos State Ministry of Health,” he said.
