The Lagos State Government has urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying, riverine, coastal and other flood-prone communities, to remain vigilant following a seven-day flood alert issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA).

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the call in a statement urging residents to take the warning seriously and take precautionary measures ahead of possible flooding.

According to Wahab, residents in several communities have been advised to remain on high alert from September 19 to 25, particularly areas vulnerable to rising water levels and flooding.

The areas listed include Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront, Jetty Terminal B, as well as communities located along the Ogun River and other waterways.

Other vulnerable locations identified include Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto, parts of Agboyi and other settlements downstream of Isheri Olofin.

Wahab urged residents in vulnerable communities to relocate to safer and higher ground whenever necessary, stressing that residents should not wait for floodwaters to rise before taking action.

“No property is worth risking a life,” the commissioner said.

He said the Lagos State Government was intensifying its monitoring of rainfall patterns and river levels while working with relevant agencies to strengthen flood prevention and emergency response measures.

The commissioner also advised residents to keep drainage channels and waterways free of refuse to reduce the risk of flooding.

He warned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to cross flooded roads or waterways, urging residents to rely only on official flood forecasts and safety advisories.

Wahab said the government’s priority remained the protection of lives and property, while urging Lagosians to remain calm, vigilant and responsive to safety instructions as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
