The Lagos State Government has announced plans to intensify traffic enforcement along the Apapa and Lekki Port corridors following an assessment of traffic conditions and feedback from stakeholders.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, disclosed this on Tuesday during a strategy meeting at the Ministry of Transportation, Alausa. He said the assessment identified gaps in the existing enforcement process, prompting the ministry to review its strategy.
Giwa said additional traffic management personnel would be deployed to the Lekki Port corridor to improve compliance with the E-Call-Up system and facilitate the movement of articulated trucks in and out of the ports.
He also urged officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to remain committed to their responsibilities as the revised enforcement strategy is implemented.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, said a shift-duty system would be introduced for LASTMA officers along both corridors to ensure continuous coverage. He added that officers found to be underperforming would be redeployed.
Musa also warned operators of illegal parks around the Apapa and Lekki port areas to comply with the state’s operational guidelines.
The ministry urged truck operators and other stakeholders to voluntarily comply with the E-Call-Up system to reduce congestion along the port corridors. It added that requests for clemency from violators after enforcement would not be entertained.
The meeting was attended by the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the agency’s Director of Operations, controllers, Commanders Zebras and other senior officers responsible for the two corridors.
