The management of Lagos State University has announced the death of a student, Boluwatife Joseph Otabor, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.

Otabor, a student in the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, reportedly died on June 2, 2026, after receiving medical treatment for several days.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr. Olaniyi Jeariogbe, the university described the incident as tragic and expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death.

The Vice-Chancellor, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, on behalf of the university community, extended condolences to the deceased student’s family, friends and colleagues.

According to the institution, the attack occurred off-campus on the night of May 29, when Otabor and several friends were allegedly attacked by armed robbers in the Iba area.

LASU said it immediately activated support measures through the Office of the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs and maintained close communication with medical personnel overseeing the student’s treatment while monitoring his condition throughout his hospitalisation.

Following confirmation of his death, representatives of the university visited members of the family and engaged with officials of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and relevant law enforcement agencies.

The institution said it is collaborating with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the attack and to facilitate the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

LASU again expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for the repose of the student’s soul, describing his death as a painful loss to the university community.
