Operatives of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) have arrested two suspected environmental offenders for engaging in illegal waste collection and indiscriminate disposal of refuse along the Jibowu and Ojota corridors of Ikorodu Road.
The suspects, identified as Biodun Abdul Kareem and Anyanwu Micheal, were apprehended during a routine night surveillance operation carried out by LAWMA’s Waste, Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement team.
According to the agency, the suspects were caught carrying out activities that violate Lagos State environmental laws by collecting waste illegally and dumping refuse at unauthorized locations.
LAWMA noted that the arrests were part of ongoing efforts to enforce environmental regulations and maintain a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
The agency added that the offenders acted despite repeated public sensitization campaigns and warnings against illegal waste management practices.
The suspects are expected to be transferred to the Oshodi Task Force Office, where they will be processed for prosecution through the Mobile Court in line with the environmental protection laws of Lagos State.
Reaffirming its commitment to environmental sanitation, LAWMA warned that illegal waste collection and indiscriminate dumping remain punishable offences under the law.
The authority also urged residents and business owners across the state to patronize only approved Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and ensure that waste is disposed of through authorized channels.
LAWMA stressed that sustained compliance with proper waste management practices is essential to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable environment in Lagos.
