The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Johnson Elleh for allegedly producing and circulating a misleading video claiming there were kidnapping and banditry incidents along the Owode-Idiroko axis of the state.
According to the police, the video was immediately investigated after it went viral. Authorities said findings confirmed that the claims were false and that no such kidnapping or banditry incident occurred in the area or its surroundings.
The Command stated that the suspect was identified in the video and subsequently tracked down and arrested by detectives.
Preliminary investigations suggest he intentionally fabricated and shared the content to attract online attention and engagement.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to creating and distributing the video for publicity purposes. Police said investigations are ongoing, after which he will be charged to court.
The Command condemned the spread of misinformation relating to security matters, warning that false reports capable of causing panic or public disorder would be met with strict legal consequences.
It further assured residents that Ogun State remains safe and urged the public to rely only on verified information from official sources.
Residents were also advised to report genuine emergencies through the Ogun State Police Command’s emergency lines and toll-free number.
