A 47-year-old man, Temitope Elegbede, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Badagry over the alleged assault of his landlady.
The defendant, whose residential address was not disclosed, is facing charges of assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Edet Ekpo, told the court that the alleged offence occurred on April 7 at about 9:20 a.m. on Panusa Ajobuwe Street in Ilogbo, Badagry.
According to the prosecution, the defendant allegedly assaulted his landlady, identified as Oluwabunmi Otokiti, by grabbing her neck inside her residence.
He further told the court that the defendant’s actions were likely to disturb public peace.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.
The offences, the prosecutor said, contravene Sections 168 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He added that one of the sureties must be a community leader.
The case was adjourned until May 14 for mention.
