Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday commissioned the Lagos Fresh Food Hub at Pen Cinema, Agege, as part of the State Government’s efforts to strengthen food security, improve food distribution and bring fresh produce closer to residents.
The facility, built on a 7,000-square-metre site, is designed to provide a more organised platform for food trading and distribution. It features a 4,000-square-metre trading floor with space for approximately 350 to 400 traders, an 800-metric-tonne dry storage facility and about 300 metric tonnes of cold storage capacity.
The Agege Fresh Food Hub also has an expanded, purpose-built seafood section, parking space for about 80 to 90 vehicles and 10 electric vehicle charging points. The facility is equipped to support key activities including produce receiving, quality control, storage, inventory management, sanitation and waste reduction.
The hub brings together farmers, aggregators, bulk dealers, retailers, institutional buyers and consumers within a structured system aimed at improving efficiency across the food supply chain. The initiative is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance the handling and preservation of food items and improve access to fresh and quality produce.
The Agege facility forms part of Lagos State’s wider hub-and-spoke food distribution network, designed to improve the movement of food from producers to consumers across the State. Under the model, the Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun will serve as the major distribution hub, supplying middle-level food hubs across Lagos.
Middle-level hubs such as those in Agege and Mushin will, in turn, bring wholesale and retail food distribution closer to communities, creating a more efficient and coordinated food supply system. The State Government said the network is a key component of its broader strategy to strengthen food security and build a sustainable food distribution infrastructure for Lagos’ growing population.
