The President said the reforms fulfil a commitment he made during his inauguration to create meaningful opportunities for young people and place them at the centre of his administration’s development agenda.
As part of the newly approved reforms, Tinubu announced that the NYSC will now be headed by a civilian Director-General, replacing the long-standing practice of appointing a military officer to lead the scheme.
He also disclosed that the NYSC orientation course will be extended from its current duration to six weeks.
According to him, the additional time will enable corps members to receive enhanced training in entrepreneurship, employability and national service, ensuring they leave the programme better prepared for the labour market.
The President further revealed that orientation camps across the country will be evaluated under a national grading and certification framework, while state governments will be required to meet minimum operational standards to improve the quality and consistency of the programme nationwide.
