President Bola Tinubu has announced a new initiative to train 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians under the Power Force programme, as part of efforts to create jobs and improve electricity service delivery across the country.

The President said the programme, which falls under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), is designed to bridge Nigeria’s metering gap, eliminate estimated billing, protect electricity consumers and strengthen the nation’s power sector.

According to Tinubu, the initiative aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda by providing young Nigerians with practical technical skills and access to employment opportunities in the electricity industry.

The programme will be open to eligible Nigerians who have completed their secondary school education, while a dedicated quota has been reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The President said expanding electricity metering remains critical to improving power supply, noting that proper metering enables consumers to pay only for the electricity they use while allowing distribution companies to collect revenue more transparently.

He added that improved revenue collection would help electricity distribution companies reduce losses, maintain infrastructure, expand customer connections and invest in better service delivery.

Tinubu has directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), and other relevant stakeholders to begin implementing the programme within the next 30 days.
