The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday commented on the political developments in Rivers State, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s reported withdrawal from the 2027 governorship race under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike, while speaking to journalists during an inspection of infrastructure projects in Abuja, also expressed support for House of Representatives member Kingsley Chinda, describing his emergence as the APC governorship candidate as politically natural.

He alleged that the political crisis in Rivers State was shaped by a prior agreement involving President Bola Tinubu, claiming that Fubara had agreed to step down from a second-term ambition in exchange for the suspension of impeachment proceedings by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

According to Wike, the governor’s initial move to obtain nomination forms contradicted what he described as an earlier political understanding.

“In the first place, he ought not to have collected the form because the agreement was reached that the impeachment should be dropped, while he should also not talk about a second tenure,” Wike said.

He added that President Tinubu had repeatedly intervened in the crisis, appealing to stakeholders to maintain peace and prevent further escalation of impeachment efforts.

Wike criticised Fubara’s actions, describing them as inconsistent with the alleged agreement and “not showing gentlemanship.”

Despite the tensions, the FCT Minister said he was not surprised by recent political outcomes in the state, insisting they aligned with established political realities.

Beyond politics, Wike said he was satisfied with ongoing infrastructure projects in the Federal Capital Territory, describing the day as one of his happiest since assuming office.

He listed several inspected projects, including the Renewed Hope City in Kassara, Old Ketti Road in Dei Dei, the Airport Road–Kuje corridor, the Kuje–Gwagwalada road (Phase 1), and the City Gate project.

Wike praised contractors for the quality of work delivered and commended the City Gate project, which he said was initiated by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
