The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Ngodo-Isuochi chapter in Abia State, has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the institution’s management over alleged failure to implement staff welfare demands and comply with statutory obligations.

The ultimatum was conveyed in a letter dated May 26, 2026, and addressed to the Rector, Dr. Pdi Ndubuisi. The letter was jointly signed by the chapter chairman, Mr. Ador Osundu, and the secretary, Mr. Onyeneke Arrhenius.

According to the union, several attempts to resolve the issues through dialogue, congress resolutions and official correspondence have not yielded meaningful results, leading to growing dissatisfaction among staff members.

ASUP said the continued delay in addressing the concerns had created industrial tension within the institution, weakened confidence in the administration and posed a threat to the smooth running of academic activities.

The union warned that it would be compelled to activate all lawful trade union mechanisms, including industrial action, if the outstanding issues were not resolved within the stipulated period.

The ultimatum, which was adopted during the union’s congress held on May 22, 2026, took effect from May 26, the date the letter was received by the institution’s management.

ASUP outlined six major grievances, alleging that the management had failed to meet certain obligations relating to staff welfare and statutory compliance. The union also claimed that some of the unresolved matters amounted to violations of Nigerian labour, health and anti-corruption regulations.

Among the issues raised was the alleged failure of the management to facilitate the sensitisation and enrolment of staff into the National Housing Fund scheme. The union argued that this contravenes provisions of the National Housing Fund Act, which requires employers to cooperate in the deduction and remittance of contributions for eligible workers.

The lecturers’ union also maintained that addressing the concerns promptly would help restore confidence, improve staff welfare and prevent disruptions to academic activities at the institution.
